The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centres is increasing demand for power cables and placing greater pressure on global cable manufacturing capacity, according to a Reuters report published on October 22, 2026.

Nexans CFO Vincent Piquet noted that global cable supply remains tight and that establishing a new cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable production line can take approximately three years. Data centres require substantial quantities of low- and medium-voltage cables to support reliable power distribution, while grid connection constraints continue to delay some projects.

The report also highlights a shift toward longer-term procurement agreements as electricity network operators seek to secure cable supplies. These developments underscore the growing importance of manufacturing capacity, supply chain planning and reliable delivery in the power cable industry.

As AI infrastructure and data centre investments continue to evolve, power distribution equipment and cable supply chains are becoming increasingly important to the development of digital infrastructure worldwide.
